Passed away Monday, January 21, 2013. Richard was a gentle soul with a heart of gold. He will be remembered most for his inquisitive nature of the world around him and his incredible memory for details. Richard had a sense of humor and love of “friendly Banter”. He had the ability to strike up conversation and make instant friends with anyone he met. One month shy of his 48th birthday, he slipped away peacefully while napping in his favorite chair. Always a believer, his family is comforted in knowing that he with his savior in heaven.
Born on February 16, 1965, in Santa Barbara. Richard was the second of three children. Even in his early years, Richard was always curious about the world. He developed a keen sense of knowledge on many subjects by diving into books and soaking up every last detail. In 1981, the family took a 5 week European vacation. Touring England, France, Germany, and Italy in our bright yellow VW Vanagon, Richard kept the family entertained with his knowledge of D-Day and WWII. Richard carried his Auntie’s giant yellow suitcase on his head throughout many narrow cobblestone roads that summer in Europe.
In his later years, Richard joined his parents to live in San Luis Obispo. There he became an avid Cal Poly sports fan. Attending many sports events with his parent or on his own, Richard never missed a opportunity to cheer enthusiastically for his favorite Mustang sports teams. His cheers and presence at these games will forever be missed by his family. Most important to Richard was his family. He loved attending many cherished family celebrations at his Auntie’s ranch in Santa Maria and he always looked forward to spending Christmas in Utah with his nieces and nephews.
Richard found daily life challenging and he knew his limitations. Our family is forever grateful for the many “angels” who touched his life and helped him in so many ways. Daniel for his never-ending patience, commitment and long time friendship with Richard. Anne and Jen who helped him with his daily living, Susan who helped keep his toes healthy and happy and Marina who challenged him to exercise.
Richard leaves his parents M. Richard and Joyce Andrews, siblings, Jon Robert Andrews (deceased), sister Elizabeth Tracy, brother-in-law Christopher Tracy, four nephews and nieces – Grant Tracy, McKenna Tracy, Walker Tracy, and Reagan Tracy. He also leaves his Auntie Angel and Uncle Alex, cousins Denise, Terry, and Christopher.
Services will be held on Friday, February 1, 2013. Richard will be laid to rest next to his beloved brother in the Santa Barbara Cemetery at 9:30 AM. Memorial Services will follow at 2:00 PM in San Luis Obispo at the First Presbyterian Church on Marsh Street and Moro Street.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Richard’s name to Cal Poly Athletics, for Football and/or Men’s Basketball at 1 Grand Avenue, San Luis Obispo, CA 93407.
