After just a 26-point first half, the Bishop Diego boys basketball team exploded in the second frame, pouring in 43 points against Malibu, resulting in a 69-41 win in the first round of the Thacher Tournament.
Freshman Luis Fernandez scored 18 of his 20 points in the second half alone, with four baskets coming from three-point range.
“I was really pleased with our ball movement today. We were sharing the ball, it led to some exciting shots, and that turned up our defense. Great team win today. Marcus Chan made his debut from a football injury and I felt his energy sparked us as well,” Bishop coach James Coronado said.
The Cardinals’ Kai Morphy led all scorers with 23 points while Bishop’s defense held Malibu’s leading scorer, Armon Santizo, to just 13 points.
