GAVIOTA A vegetation fire burned an estimated five to six acres Thursday afternoon near Highway 101 and Mariposa Reina Road near Gaviota, authorities said.
Santa Barbara County Fire Department crews were dispatched to the area at approximately 1:35 p.m. Crews found a small vegetation fire burning in light fuels off the southbound side of the 101, said Capt. Nikki Stevens, a fire spokesman.
The blaze, called the Beach Incident, had the potential to burn up to 15 acres, but the fire was quickly squelched at less than six acres, Capt. Stevens said.
Railroad traffic was closed for several hours Thursday to allow crews to access the blaze, the cause of which remains under investigation.
