
Was born on August 28, 1929, to Elsie and George Harms, in Chicago, Illinois. A “preacher’s kid,” she grew up in Saskatchewan, Montana, and northern California. She earned a BS in nursing from Stanford. After graduation she became the San Francisco area director for the Navigators women’s work.
She married Dr. Dwight Carlson in 1958, had two children, and lived most of her adult life in Torrance, California, before moving to the Samarkand in 2006.
Betty was active leading women’s Bible studies and mentoring women. Her honesty and genuineness as she sought to integrate Christian teaching, Bible study, and her personal experience had a profound impact on many.
She is survived by her husband, Dwight, her children, Susan Carlson Wood and Greg Carlson, a grandchild, Charissa Wood, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held May 18, 11:00am, at Montecito Covenant Church, 671 Cold Springs Road, Santa Barbara. Arrangements entrusted to McDermott-Crockett Mortuary
