Dr. James F. Case. 86, died at home in Santa Barbara on July 12, 2013, of a heart attack after a long period of ill health.
He was born in Bristow, Oklahoma, on October 27m 1926. His parents were Jesse Fred and Jean Lucille Case.
After graduating with a PhD from The Johns Hopkins University, Jim pursued a long and illustrious carrer in biological science, mainly in the field of marine bioluminescence. Afer a short time at the Agricultural Research Center in Beltsville, Maryland, he attended the Army’s Chemical Center in Edgewood, Maryland. After working there as officer and then civilian, he moved on to the University of Iowa and then to the University of California at Santa Barbara, spending summers at the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole, Massachusetts. He was a veteran Navy-supported researcher, and in 1996 was the recipient of the Navy’s Superior Public Service Award. He retired after nine years as Associate Vice Chancellor of Research at UCSB.
In 1950 he married Audrey Farrow and they had three sons, After a divorce in 1968, he married Patricia Collard and they
had a daughter.
Surviving him are three sons, David, Paul (Linda) and Spencer Case; a daughter, Summers Case; stepson Sneed Collard; a granddaughter; a great-granddaughter; and his first wife. Patricia pre-deceased him about a year ago. Also, Jim had received loving care for several years from Luz and Coco Anguiano.
