9/20/1936 – 3/30/2013
After a lengthy battle with PMP, our beloved Glen passed into the arms of the Lord at his home in Santa Maria. Born September 20, 1936 in Chicago, Illinois to Roy and Juel Chaffin, Glen was 76. He was an outstanding athlete, starring in football, basketball, and baseball in high school and earned a football scholarship to the University of Illinois.
Polio prevented him from fulfilling his dream of playing college football. After overcoming polio, Glen met his bride and the mother of his two children, Roberta Hewson. They married in February 1959 and later that year were greeted with the birth of their daughter Carrie.
In 1961 son Jeff was born and Glen’s family was complete. Glen approached his professional life with the same ferocity as he did with sports and quickly advanced in the meat cutting industry. In 1973 the family moved to Santa Barbara where Glen took a meat supervisor job with the supermarket chain Fazio’s, overseeing numerous stores throughout southern California before becoming a gardener in 1978; retiring just recently.
Glen’s life took a dramatic change in 1978 when he welcomed Jesus Christ into his life. He would spend the rest of his years sharing his faith with anyone who would listen and even those who wouldn’t. A proud father and husband, Glen was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, June Hildebrandt and Gwen Baker, and his second wife Linda. He is survived by his wife Jeri Chaffin, daughter Carrie (John) Mattingly of San Luis Obispo, son Jeff Chaffin of Santa Barbara, brother Russ Chaffin of Santa Barbara, stepdaughters Stacy (Gammy) Jimenez and Jennifer Patterson, both of Santa Maria, nieces Debbie Wroble and Sandy Trieboldt, nephews Gary and Scott Hildebrandt, and Mike and Terry Baker, numerous grand and great-grandchildren, and his best friend Steve Conklin.
The family extends gratitude to the many people who cared for Glen during his illness. A memorial service is planned at Calvary Chapel, Arroyo Grande, 1133 Maple Street on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at 3:00 p.m.
