LOMPOC A 12-year old girl was found unconscious in the street after she was struck by a vehicle Wednesday morning near the intersection of Chestnut Avenue and M Street, police said.
Police were dispatched to the area at 7:40 a.m. and officers located the girl on the street. She was transported by ambulance to Marian Regional Medical Center in Santa Maria, according to a department news release.
Witnesses said the girl was with her mother and were crossing the street on the way to school when she was struck. The cause of the incident is under investigation. Alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a factor, police said.
Police are investigating whether the driver was on a cell phone or hands-free device when the collision occurred.
As of 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, the child was transported to Valley Children’s Hospital in Madera County.
