Gary was born in Hancock, Michigan to Lucy and Bonner Crawford. He spent his youth in Albuquerque, New Mexico and then attended the University of Michigan , graduating as an orthopedic surgeon from the University of California San Francisco Medical School. The following year he completed a fellowship in hand surgery in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Gary began his medical practice in Santa Barbara, California in 1969 as the sole hand surgeon between San Francisco and Los Angeles.
He became enamored with Bozeman, Montana while visiting in 1996 and shortly thereafter set up a second practice in Bozeman, continuing to care for patients in both states throughout the remainder of his life. Gary found great joy in being a physician for the U.S. Ski Team for over 25 years.
His greatest joys, however, were found among the times spent with family, friends and patients in his profession. Gary is survived by his wife Monique, five children: Katrina (Ray), David (Angie), Krysten (Christopher), Phillip, and Klazina; six grandchildren: Nicole, Ryan, Kyle, Lily, Kallista, and Crawford; and three siblings: Bob, David, and Mary (Vic).
A funeral mass will be held for Gary on February 23, 2013 at 11:00 AM at Holy Rosary Parish, 220 West Main St., Bozeman, Montana 59715. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to do so may contribute to the Santa Barbara Cancer Center, 524 W. Pueblo St., Santa Barbara, California 93105 or the Gallatin Food Bank, P.O.
