Our poor Police Department exists in squalor, and its station needs to be torn to the ground with a new one built? Where should we put it? Rather than the Cota Commuter Lot, it might work better located at the old Sears building. Why? A vehicle maintenance shop is already on the premises. There’s plenty of parking. It has easy access to the freeway. The shopping is much better and the Starbucks is closer. The jail is closer. Heck, there’s enough space over there to add an additional building to the upper lot. In the meantime, the Figueroa location can be sold off to a developer to increase housing. Maybe it could be done in trade. For those insisting that Upper State Street is nowhere near downtown, the vacant Macy’s could be a great satellite office. Perhaps we’re mistaken, isn’t Upper State Street still a part of the city of Santa Barbara? Then again, we could build 550 more apartments and add a minimum of 550 vehicles to scatter throughout Calle Real, LaCumbre, State and Hope.
