77, passed away after a long struggle with pulmonary fibrosis on Friday, June 21, 2013 in Oakland, California. He was surrounded by family at the time of his passing. He was born January 12, 1936 in Liberal, Kansas, and grew up in Guymon, Oklahoma. Fred was valedictorian of Guymon High School’s class of 1954. He studied at Oklahoma University, where he met his wife Sue Paschall. They were married in May of 1960. Fred was a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity, and he also served in the Navy as a Lieutenant. He earned his PhD in physics at Oklahoma University, which he practiced in Los Alamos, New Mexico until 1970, and then in Santa Barbara, California until 2001, and as a part-time consultant in his retirement.
Fred cared deeply about the world, and spent time involved in organizations such as Big Brothers Big Sisters, where he was on the board, and Boy Scouts, where he served as a Scout Master. While he was a man of science, he was also a man of deep faith. Fred was a very active member in the First Congregational Church of Santa Barbara and later in the Unity Church in Grass Valley during his retirement.
Fred was an excellent golfer, which he played well and passionately throughout his entire life, almost always maintaining a handicap in the single digits. Fred also enjoyed traveling the world, hiking in the back country of California and engaging in deep philosophical discussions with his close friends. What he enjoyed most though was spending time with his family, who now lives in Northern California and Oregon. He spent most of the past two and a half years, with the help of his family, lovingly supporting his wife of 53 years after she suffered a stroke.
Fred is survived by his wife, Sue, his brother, Don, his four children and their families: Mike and Adrienne; Ben and Robert; Joe and Laura; Suzanne and Michael, along with his six grandchildren: Drew, Elise, Hannah, Nathan, Kevin and Jayden.
Two memorial services are being planned for Fred. The first one will be n July 11th at 6:30pm at Bayside Park Assisted Living Facility in Emeryville, CA, and a second service will be in Santa Barbara on July 20th at 10am at the First Congregational Church of Santa Barbara in Santa Barbara, CA.
