A fire broke out Monday around 6:30 p.m. in Gaviota, with five acres of vegetation off Highway 101 northbound burned in medium brush at a slow rate of spread, according to Captain Daniel Bertucelli. Santa Barbara County firefighters have attacked the fire from both air and ground using five fire trucks and a helicopter.
Late Monday night, officials also announced that the northbound rest area at Gaviota had also been closed until further notice.
The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, with windy conditions pushing the small roadside fire into the current five-acre blaze.
No structures are threatened, and no injuries have been reported.
As of press time, the 101 remained open with California Highway Patrol in the area.
