GAVIOTA Five people were injured, including one person who suffered major injuries, in a multi-vehicle collision Wednesday morning on Highway 101 about one mile south of the Gaviota rest stop.
The collision was reported at 7:26 a.m. on the southbound side of the highway. Upon arrival, Santa Barbara County Fire Department crews found heavy traffic backup and found five vehicles involved in the collision, said Capt. Daniel Bertucelli, fire spokesman.
Three patients were transported, two of whom suffered minor injuries and the third patient who was listed in critical condition. Two others declined further medical treatment, Capt. Bertucelli said.
Southbound 101 was closed for approximately 15 minutes following the collision.
The California Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the collision.
