SANTA MARIA Sergio’s Furniture and Mattress was considered a total loss in a two-alarm structure fire Thursday morning in 700 block of South Broadway in Santa Maria, officials said.
The fire was reported around 7 a.m. Thursday at the 15,225 square-foot building, which housed Shaw’s Famous Steakhouse and Tavern and the furniture store. Fire crews arrived to find the structure fully involved in fire, according to city officials.
The building sustained such significant damage that its walls had to be braced for safety and significant portions of the roof collapsed. The adjacent sidewalk and one northbound lane of South Broadway (State Route 135) were closed to the public.
Security guards were posted at the property and premises are expected to be fenced.
A total of 11 fire engines and 45 personnel from the Santa Maria, Santa Barbara County fire departments, CalFire and Five Cities Fire Authority were assigned to the blaze, which took more than six hours to contain, Mark van de Kamp, city spokesman, said in a news release.
No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
