SANTA BARBARA A Goleta man was arrested Thursday night on suspicion of felony DUI causing injury in connection with a fatal collision that occurred on State Route 154 east of San Marcos Road, authorities said.
The collision occurred just before 6 p.m. on April 9. Brian W. Dul, 22, of Goleta, was driving a 2005 Mazda east on the 154 when he crossed over into the westbound lane of traffic directly into the path of a Toyota driven by 59-year-old Mitchell Summer, of Long Beach, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Mr. Summer, along with passenger Kelly Summer, 52, of Long Beach, suffered minor injuries in the collision. Mr. Dul suffered moderate injuries, and both he and Ms. Summer were transported by ground ambulance to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital for treatment, the CHP said.
The passenger in the Mazda, a 21-year-old Santa Barbara man, suffered major injuries and was transported to Cottage Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries, according to authorities.
“During the course of the investigation, Officers determined Mr. Dul was impaired at the time of the collision,” read a news release issued by the CHP.
Mr. Dul, who attended Dos Pueblos High School and Santa Barbara City College, was taken into custody. The collision remains under investigation. Anyone with information on the collision, or the events leading up to it, is asked to contact the CHP by calling 805-967-1234.
