A Life Filled with Music
Gilbert M. Herrera was born November 21, 1965 to parents Yolanda and Gilbert Herrera. Since his teenage years, Gil dedicated his life to music. He studied at Santa Barbara City College where he received an AA in Music with honors and focused on jazz guitar. He continued his education at UC Santa Cruz where he earned his BA in American Studies and learned to play classical guitar. Gil pursued a Master’s of Arts degree in Jazz Studies at the University of Oregon.
Gil became a very talented musician and performed guitar at countless venues including jazz clubs and live musical theater in Eugene, Oregon; cruises such as Royal Caribbean’s Enchantments of the Seas Big Band Orchestra; and in local restaurants throughout Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. In the last few years, Gil performed at retirement homes, art exhibits, and wedding celebrations. Music was his passion and gift which he lovingly shared with all who listened.
Gil also loved being in nature, watching movies, and spending time with close friends. He was a loving son, brother, friend, and fellow musician. He will be missed by many and his music will live on.
The Herrera family would like to thank family and friends for all the kindness and support they have been shown at this difficult time. A funeral mass will be held Tuesday, July 16th at the Santa Barbara Mission at 10am.
