A suspect in a homicide was shot and killed by sheriff’s deputies Tuesday night at or near a residence in the 4100 block of Mariposa Drive in Hope Ranch, authorities said.
Around 8:15 p.m. Tuesday, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department responded to a report of a family disturbance. Deputies arrived on scene and found an elderly female homicide victim inside the home, said Lt. Erik Raney, sheriff’s spokesman.
Nearby residents were advised to shelter in place while deputies searched for the suspect.
A short time later, the suspect, whose identity was withheld, was located either on or adjacent to the property. Deputies attempted to take the suspect into custody and the suspect presented a threat toward law enforcement. An officer-involved shooting then occurred and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, Lt. Raney said.
There were no other known victims involved in the incident and the shelter in place was lifted following the shooting.
“We feel as if we have the situation contained,” Lt. Raney told the News-Press.
Deputies remained on scene Tuesday night to investigate what transpired in the incident. Additional details were withheld.
