Edith Mac Veagh Huey, 87, of Peterborough, New Hampshire and Cuttyhunk Island, Massachusetts, died January 9, 2013 at the RiverMead Retirement Community.
She was born on November 17, 1925 in Washington, DC, the daughter of Ewen C. Mac Veagh and Louise Thoron Mac Veagh. She grew up in New York City and Dublin, New Hampshire, where she spent summers as a child and young adult. She graduated from Bennington College in 1948. She was married for 57 years to Harris Huey, who died in 2006.
Edith moved to Peterborough in 2008 after having lived most of her adult life in New York City and Santa Barbara, California. She was a lifelong student, particularly of art history and Italian culture. For many years she was a volunteer at Harlem Hospital in New York City. She and Harris sailed extensively in New England waters, and enjoyed foreign travel, especially to Rome. They spent summers for over 50 years at Cuttyhunk, where Edith was an avid gardener and bird watcher. She was a member of the Colony Club in New York City.
Edith will be missed by her many dear friends and her family. She is survived by: her daughter Lindley Huey and her husband Karl Koster of Brookline, Massachusetts; her son George Huey and his wife Christina Watkins of Chino Valley, Arizona; her sisters, Moira Burnham of Dublin, New Hampshire and Eileen Toumanoff of Ojai, California and their husbands; her granddaughter Sarah McGuire, her husband A.J., and their daughter Lucy of Boston, Massachusetts; her granddaughter Lydia Desmond of Brooklyn, New York; her nieces Nina Toumanoff, Moira Burnham, and Diana Burnham and nephews Michael Toumanoff and Dan Burnham; and her many Mac Veagh and Thoron cousins.
A memorial service is planned for Saturday February 2, 2013 at 3:00 PM at RiverMead, 150 RiverMead Road, Peterborough, New Hampshire. A memorial service will also be held at Cuttyhunk in the summer.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in Edith’s memory to the Cuttyhunk Public Library, Cuttyhunk, MA 02713.
