April 9, 1940, Santa Barbara – Nov. 19, 2012, Marcola, OR
Preceded in death by his parents Mollie E. Simpson and John J. Hughes. He is survived by his first wife Janet (Jones) and their two sons Brian and Kevin, his second wife Linda (Crews), their children Sean and Kerry, step-children Jack and Kelly Gudeman Johnson, sister Carell Hughes Jantzen (Monty), nieces Steffany Jantzen Knable and Jenica Jantzen Egan and their three children. His seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren and many cousins, on both the east and west coast will miss him.
Dave attended Hope School where he joined the Boy Scouts. At La Cumbre Jr. High he joined F.F.A. and raised a pig named, Herbie. After graduating from S.B High in 1958, he joined the Navy for four years as a corpsman. He earned his B.A. in 1985 from the University of Oregon.
He later worked in the Oregon timber industry and yet cared deeply for trees. On one occasion, his efforts to save an old maple tree made front page news in Oregon! Dave loved animals and every year a cat or two would snuggle into Dave’s warm heart and home and join the rest of his beloved and rescued cat family. He and wife Linda also rescued and tended wild animals before they were released once again to the wild.
His ashes will be interred at his parents’ gravesite in the Goleta Cemetery. His family would love you to share any personal stories you might recollect about Dave. Please send them all to carell@egan.org.
