SANTA MARIA A free workshop on creating cartoneras is being offered from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday and on June 19 at the Cuyama Branch of the Santa Maria Library.
The workshop is open to all ages on a first-come, first-served basis. Seating is limited, according to a news release.
Cartoneras are traditional to Latin America and are “brightly painted books filled with poetry and stories.” These cartoneras will center around what “independence” means to participants as the Fourth of July inches closer.
The Santa Maria Library will also have a used book sale at its Public Library Shop from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 17 to June 20.
The Cuyama Branch Library is located at 4689 State Route 166 while the Santa Maria Library is at 421 S. McClelland St.
