The Bishop Diego girls basketball team lost in the first round of the State Tournament Tuesday, losing at Madison High in San Diego, 49-26.
The Cardinals (23-10) failed to get in a rhythm at any point, never scoring double digits in a single quarter. Junior guard Elliott Redkey led the effort, scoring 10 points in the loss.

The Vaqueros scored five runs in the third inning, propelling them to a home win over league foe Ventura. Jarred Greene led SBCC (11-6, 3-1), going 2-for-3 from the plate with two RBIs.

The Cardinals dropped to 4-4 to start the season following a one-run loss. Bishop had five runs in the second and led 5-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh before losing 6-5.

Senior Julia Gregson went 3-for-5 from the plate with a pair of doubles while freshman Lucy Plowman went 4-for-5 to lead the Cardinals to a win Tuesday.

The Chargers improved to 3-1 on the young season thanks to a team-high 14 kills from Sean Ortiz, six blocks from Eric Schwartz and 26 assists from Troy Fitzgerald.

A short-handed Cardinals team dropped their first game of the season, losing in three sets at Viewpoint. Bishop Diego was led by Sam Mikaele who had eight kills.

The Royals won their Channel League opener Tuesday thanks to nine wins in doubles. Through four matches, San Marcos is 33-3 in doubles play.

The Chargers dominated their match against Cabrillo, dropping just 20 games in singles and doubles play combined. Ryan Belkin at No. 1 singles won his two matches, 6-0, 6-0.

The Warriors (2-4) picked up a win in their Citrus Coast League opener Tuesday, as Austin Stone went 3-0 in singles to lead the effort.

MELGOZA NAMED TO ALL PAC-12 TEAM
Former Santa Barbara High standout Amber Melgoza was named to the 2020 All-Pac-12 team. In her final season at the University of Washington, Melgoza averaged 16.7 points per game during her senior season and will finish her career among the top 10 scorers in Huskies’ history.
