The Bishop Diego girls basketball team lost in the first round of the State Tournament Tuesday, losing at Madison High in San Diego, 49-26.
The Cardinals (23-10) failed to get in a rhythm at any point, never scoring double digits in a single quarter. Junior guard Elliott Redkey led the effort, scoring 10 points in the loss.

The Vaqueros scored five runs in the third inning, propelling them to a home win over league foe Ventura. Jarred Greene led SBCC (11-6, 3-1), going 2-for-3 from the plate with two RBIs.

The Cardinals dropped to 4-4 to start the season following a one-run loss. Bishop had five runs in the second and led 5-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh before losing 6-5.

Senior Julia Gregson went 3-for-5 from the plate with a pair of doubles while freshman Lucy Plowman went 4-for-5 to lead the Cardinals to a win Tuesday.

The Chargers improved to 3-1 on the young season thanks to a team-high 14 kills from Sean Ortiz, six blocks from Eric Schwartz and 26 assists from Troy Fitzgerald.
VIEWPOINT 3, BISHOP DIEGO 0
A short-handed Cardinals team dropped their first game of the season, losing in three sets at Viewpoint. Bishop Diego was led by Sam Mikaele who had eight kills.

Unbeaten Ventura snapped SBCC’s previous four-match win streak with a win Tuesday.

The Dons started Channel League play with a bang, sweeping all sets through the first two rounds to eventually beat Lompoc 14-4 Tuesday.

The Royals won their Channel League opener Tuesday thanks to nine wins in doubles. Through four matches, San Marcos is 33-3 in doubles play.
DOS PUEBLOS 18, CABRILLO 0
The Chargers dominated their match against Cabrillo, dropping just 20 games in singles and doubles play combined. Ryan Belkin at No. 1 singles won his two matches, 6-0, 6-0.
CARPINTERIA 12, MALIBU 6
The Warriors (2-4) picked up a win in their Citrus Coast League opener Tuesday, as Austin Stone went 3-0 in singles to lead the effort.
SBCC 8, VENTURA 1
The Vaqueros won their 10th straight match Tuesday following a road win at Ventura. Jamaica Buyse, Maura Mannix, Joica Buyse, Ashley Allen and Sydney Paillon all won in straight sets.

The Chargers led 6-3 at halftime, but could not muster any scoring over the final 10 minutes, losing to Div. 2 powerhouse Valencia. Avery Ball had two goals in the loss.

The Royals outshot the Conquistadores 17-13 but came out on the losing end in a one-goal game Tuesday.

Freshman Leo Metzgar carded a 2-under par 69 in his high school debut Tuesday, earning Medalist honors in the Royals loss against Newbury Park at Rancho San Marcos.
MELGOZA NAMED TO ALL PAC-12 TEAM
Former Santa Barbara High standout Amber Melgoza was named to the 2020 All-Pac-12 team. In her final season at the University of Washington, Melgoza averaged 16.7 points per game during her senior season and will finish her career among the top 10 scorers in Huskies’ history.
