The Santa Barbara High girls basketball team opened its own Tournament of Champions in fine style on Wednesday night, scoring a 77-62 victory over Pioneer-Downey at J.R. Richards Gym.
Athena Saragoza led the Dons (8-6) with a game-high 23 points, adding five assists and three rebounds in the victory.
Lexi Alvarez and Maddie Miller each finished with 10 points, while Briana Trujillo just missed out on double figures with nine points.
Caia Trimble and Katrina Regalado also just misssed double figures with eight points each, with Trimble adding six assists, four rebounds and three steals.
Santa Barbara continues play in its Tournament of Champions by hosting Simi Valley tonight at 7 p.m.

The Chargers had their troubles trying to stop Raiders scorer Drake London, who had a game-high 39 points in a Lancers victory.
Jaron Rille led Dos Pueblos with 21 points, while Kelen Pisacane added 14 points in the loss. Baylor Huyck hit four 3-pointers for 12 points for Dos Pueblos.
Dos Pueblos heads south to face Canyon-Canyon Country at 6 p.m. on Friday.

A total of 10 different players scored for the Dons as they improved to 17-2 on the season with a road win over the Spartans.
Jackson Hamilton led Santa Barbara with 21 points, while Brye Warrecker had 14 points, and Stephen Davis 10 points.
Santa Barbara hits the road again on Friday for a 6 p.m. tiopff at Oxnard.
CARPINTERIA 60, NORDHOFF 55
The Warriors opened Citrus Coast League play with a second-quarter rally, scoring a home win over the Rangers.
Noah Nuno led Carpinteria (5-9, 1-0) with 30 points, while Jose Suarez had nine points, including a pair of key free throws in the final minute.
Carpinteria trailed by seven after the first quarter, giving up 10 turnovers in the frame.
Carpinteria stays home on Friday for Citrus Coast action against Hueneme.
