Derek True’s work on the mound and the hitting of Anthony Firestone, Bryce Warrecker and Frankie Gamberdella led the Santa Barbara High baseball team to a 6-1 win over Pine Creek, Co., on Thursday in the Pride Classic tournament in Phoeniz, Az.
True allowed no runs on one hit with 10 strikeouts and one walk to earn the victory.
Firestone contributed at the plate with a single, a triple and three runs batted in. Warrecker finished with a double and two walks, while Gamberdella was 3-for-3 with two singles and a double. Jordan Harris also had a double and an RBI for Santa Barbara, which finished with four stolen bases.
BISHO DIEGO COACH
Connor Levoff has taken over as Bishop Diego’s new Aquatics Director and head coach of the water polo and swim teams, the school announced on Thursday.
Levoff, a teacher at Bishop Diego, comes over from Dos Pueblos, where he coached the boys and girls water polo teams. Levoff had a combined record of 135-54 with the DP boys and girls teams in three seasons. He was 75-20 with the girls and 60-34 with the Charger boys.
COLLEGE BASEBALLVENTURA 8, SBCC 7
The Pirates scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth for a walk-off victory over SBCC in a Western State Conference North Division game in Ventura.
The Vaqueros had scored three runs in the eighth to take a 7-4 lead. Tommy Holguin finished 2-for-4 and hit his first collegiate home run.
Logan Pollack also had a good day at the plate for the Vaqueros, finishing 3-for-4, while Pat Caulfield and Phil Quartararo were each 2-for-5.
SBCC fell to 12-10 overall and 5-6 in the WSC North.
MEN’S TENNISSBCC 7, L.A. PIERCE 2
Dominic Mariscal and Gabriel Cabezas each won their singles matches at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, for the Vaqueros, who improved to 5-10 overall and 3-4 in the Western State Conference.
L.A. Pierce only had three players, and had to forfeit five matches.
WOMEN’S TENNISHANCOCK 5, SBCC 4
The Vaqueros scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but fell one run short in dropping to 6-19 overall and 2-7 in the Western State Conference North.
Shelby Featherston had an RBI triple and drove in three runs, while Samantha Yanes and Hannah Weaver each finished 2-for-4.
CAL POLY BASKETBALL
Former Cal State Fullerton assistant men’s basketball coach John Smith was named the head coach of the Cal Poly men’s basketball team on Thursday.
Cal State Fullerton averaged 18 wins per season over the last three years while making it to one NCAA Tournament with Smith as its associate head coach.
