The San Marcos High boys volleyball team started its 2020 season on the road at Arroyo Grande Tuesday, but it didn’t stop the Royals from earning an impressive sweep over the Eagles. The set scores were 25-13, 25-5, 25-21 in favor of San Marcos.
The Royals’ offense was paced by junior middle hitter Cade McLean who totaled nine kills on 10 attempts with no errors. Junior Jake Ewart registered eight kills on nine attempts.
San Marcos will take part in the Redondo Union Tournament this weekend.
BISHOP DIEGO 3, NORDHOFF 1
The Cardinals kicked off their 2020 campaign with a four-set win over Nordhoff by set scores of 25-20, 17-25, 25-23, 25-20.
Sophomore Sam Mikeale led the Cardinals with a team-high 11 kills. Junior Shea Romero added another nine kills while Joseph Nanai finished with seven.
CATE 3, CARPINTERIA 0
Senior captain Theo Mack tallied a double-double Tuesday night in the Rams season opener, leading his team to a sweep of the Warriors. The set scores were 25-18, 25-16, 25-20.
Mack had 16 kills, 10 digs, and two blocks. Senior hitters Ethan Ng and Khadim Pouye combined for 10 kills, with Ng also earning four aces.
COLLEGE BASEBALL
SBCC 14, FULLERTON 7
Kyle Froemke went 2-for-4 on Tuesday and belted a gram slam in the seventh inning to lead the Vaqueros (9-5) to a win.
Fullerton’s pitching staff had a tough day, issuing 12 walks and hitting six batters while also allowing seven hits and 14 runs.
Mason Metcalfe pitched the final five frames for SBCC, allowing five hits and two earned runs.
WESTMONT’S KRUGER NAMED PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Westmont’s Jameson Kruger earned the Golden State Athletic Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week after tossing a complete-game shutout against San Diego Chrisitan Friday.
Kruger, now 2-0 on the season, has recorded an ERA of 2.16 this year over 25 innings of work.
HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL
SAN MARCOS 3, VALLEY ACADEMY 1
The Royals wrapped up the SCI Invitational with a two-run win over the Vipers Tuesday.
Thomas Kinzler went 2-for-3 with a home run while Henry Manfredonia got on base four times going 2-for-2 with a pair of singles and walks.
Aidan Mandel got the start on the mound for the Royals, allowing five hits and no runs in 4.1 innings. He struck out four in the win.
CROSSROADS 4, BISHOP DIEGO 3 (8 INNINGS)
The Cardinals lost in extra innings on Tuesday on the road following a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth.
Hamilton Finefrock hit a home run in the loss while Isaac Medina went 2-for-4.
MEN’S TENNIS
SBCC 9, BAKERSFIELD 0
The Vaqueros earned their first shutout of the season on the road at Bakersfield Tuesday.
Andreas Fuerst and Alexander Martin posted an 8-5 win in No. 1 doubles.
In singles, Fuerst beat Nayib Rivera 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 and Martin blanked Eduardo Garcia 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 to lead SBCC, who improved to 3-2 overall.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
SBCC 8, BAKERSFIELD 1
The Vaqueros won their 21st consecutive conference win Tuesday at home over Bakersfield.
SBCC (8-1, 6-0) saw big wins in singles from No. 1 Kelly Coulson, No. 3 Maura Mannix and No. 5 Ashley Allen, who combined only lost four games in their straight-set wins.
BOYS TENNIS
SANTA BARBARA 12, CATE 6
The Dons doubles swept all nine points Tuesday in their non-conference victory over Cate.
Santa Barbara’s Hunter Gomersall won two critical sets at No. 1 singles, while Warren Firestone and Fabian Clifford played tough in doubles. Cate’s Ethan Ha posted three wins at No. 1 singles for the Rams and did not drop a game.
LAGUNA BLANCA 13, SANTA YNEZ 5
The Owls started their 2020 season with a victory at home over Santa Ynez.
Laguna Blanca jumped on Santa Ynez early, winning five of the first six matches in round one. Junior Ryan Purkait recorded a 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 sweep at No. 3 singles while junior/senior combo Nic Richmond/Kevin Khodabandehlou swept as well, dropping only four games in the win.
CARPINTERIA 13, PACIFICA 5
The Warriors picked up their first win of the season against Pacifica on Tuesday.
In singles, Corban Pampel and Austin Stone both swept while in doubles Esteban Zapata/Ian McCurry swept as well to help Carpinteria improve to 1-3 overall.

CANYONS 8, SBCC 1
CANYONS 10, SBCC 2
Dominant pitching from the College of the Canyons proved to be too much as SBCC dropped a doubleheader at home Tuesday.
The Vaqueros (3-9) totaled four hits in each game. Lauren Del Campo went 2-for-3 with an RBI double in the third inning of the first game.

NEWBURY PARK 9, SAN MARCOS 0
The Royals started their 2020 season with a shutout loss at home Tuesday.
Junior Allie Fryklund struck out six batters in four innings of work allowing five hits and one earned run. Newbury Park collected 13 hits in the game.
Freshman Gigi Gritt had San Marcos’ only hit Tuesday, while also pitching the final three frames. The Royals had five errors over the final three innings, leading to six unearned runs.
COLLEGE GOLF
WESTMONT TAKES SECOND IN HOSTING INVITATIONAL
Lorne Fishburn carded a 1-under par 71 on Tuesday, leading all golfers in the final day of the Westmont Invitational hosted at Sandpiper Golf Course.
Fishburn finished tied for third with a score of 222 while Trevor White claimed fourth place at the tournament with a total of 224. As a team, Westmont took second place out of eight teams with a score of 912, seven strokes behind first-place The Master’s.
The Westmont women finished in last place of six competing teams. Kat Bevill had the best score for the Warriors, carding 181 over two rounds to earn 16th place.
PREP FOOTBALL
San Marcos’ Brown signs with Gannon
The former Royals receiver Josh Brown officially signed with Gannon University on Tuesday, where he will join former quarterback Ben Partee.
The multi-sport standout had 75 receptions for San Marcos in 2019 and was named First-Team All-Channel League for the second year in a row. He was also named to the All-City and All-South Coast team. Brown, a 4.0 student at San Marcos, also excels on the lacrosse team and has started for the past three years.
He plans on studying Bio Med at Gannon and received a full scholarship.
