Behind a powerful performance from Keoni Thiim, the No. 4 SBCC men’s volleyball team upset No. 2 El Camino in a Western State Conference match on the road Friday. The set scores were 19-25, 25-22, 25-23, 24-26, 16-14.
Thiim recorded 21 kills and collected 10 digs in the Vaqueros (5-2, 2-0) win. This season, SBCC has now beaten the No. 1 and No. 2 team in the state in separate occasions.
Calvin Sanborn added 13 kills and Trent Lingruen totaled 11 to help pace the offense.
Luke Hetherington had a team-high seven blocks while Kyle Merchen dished out 41 assists and picked up 10 digs.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL
BISHOP DIEGO 3, CARPINTERIA 1
Sam Mikeale had a team-high 17 kills and finished with two blocks and two aces in the Cardinals four-set victory over the Warriors.
Bishop won by set scores of 25-23, 25-20, 15-25, 27-25.
Ben Boeddeker had a solid first start of his high school career, tallying three kills and two blocks, Oliver Fowler had nine digs and two aces.

San Marcos won its first three matches on the first day of the Redondo Union Tournament.
The Royals (4-0) defeated the Redondo B team with set scores of 25-13, 25-10. They defeated Santa Monica in three sets, with scores of 25-13, 23-25, 17-15. They wrapped up the day with a two-set win over Granada Hills, with scores of 25-23, 25-15.
MEN’S BASEBALL
WESTMONT 6, THE MASTER’S 4
WESTMONT 3, THE MASTER’S 1
The No. 15 Warriors were able to rally from behind during both ends of a doubleheader in their GSAC series at The Master’s.
In Game One, Westmont fell behind 3-0 but came back courtesy of a pair of homers by Daniel Netz. Netz’ second blast of the day gave Westmont a 5-4 lead in the eighth before Devin Perez put Westmont up for good with a solo home run of his own in the top of the ninth.
In Game Two, Jameson Kruger pitched his third complete game in as many starts. Westmont was held scoreless until the top of the seventh, when Perez hit his second home run of the afternoon to give Westmont a 2-1 lead. Taylor Garcia added an RBI single later in the inning.
Kruger, the reigning GSAC Pitcher of the Week, improved to 3-0 with an ERA of 1.69 on the season.
HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL
FILLMORE 11, CARPINTERIA 2
The Flashes scored four times in both the fifth and six innings in their win at Carpinteria Friday afternoon.
Luke Lounsbury had two singles on the day, the first of which tied the game at 1 in the early going. He scored the second run for the Warriors on a Fillmore throwing error.
HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL
SAN MARCOS 10, SANTA YNEZ 0
The Royals won their first game of the season Friday afternoon, shutting out Channel League rival Santa Ynez at home in five innings.
Allie Fryklund pitched all five innings for San Marcos (1-2), allowing just two hits and striking out four. She was 3-for-4 from the plate, with three doubles and two RBIs.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
SBCC 9, CERRITOS 0
The Vaqueros (9-1) won their ninth-straight contest Saturday following a conference victory over Cerritos. SBCC dropped only five games in doubles and 17 in singles to dominate.
