
Two nights ago, the Westmont women’s basketball team stepped up and overcame a 13-point deficit to defeat No. 11 Shawnee State (OH.) by two points on day one of the Rotary Classic in Jackson, Tenn. With the victory, the Warriors had won five straight games to that point.
Their streak was ended on Saturday, however, as the Warriors lost to Campbellsville (Ky.), 70-67. In the match, Westmont again overcame a deficit, losing by eight at the half. The team led 60-59 with just over four minutes remaining in the game but gave up a 10-7 run at the end.
Westmont made 10 three’s on Saturday, but overall shot just 35% (22-62) from the field while Campbellsville only made two three’s but shot 47% (23-49) from the field.
The Tigers also outrebounded the Warriors 34-26 and made 22-of-27 free throws compared to just 13 makes from the charity stripe for Westmont.
Leading the offensive output on Saturday for the Warriors, Lauren Tsuneishi and Stefanie Berberabe each scored 16 points while Lyree Jarrett added another 14.
Madison Faulkner of Campbellsville (11-0) led all scorers with 24 points and collected 10 rebounds to earn a double-double.
Westmont opens GSAC play on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. against OUAZ on the road.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
SANTIAGO CANYON 2, SBCC 0
For the second straight season, Santiago Canyon got the better of the SBCC women’s soccer team in the SoCal Regional final, winning 2-0 on Saturday.
It was the first loss for the Vaqueros in nearly two months as they were unbeaten in their last 12 games (9-0-3) coming into the contest.
The first half was tightly contested with neither team scoring a goal, but that changed in the 65th minute when the Hawks Chloe Helenini found the back of the net.
Alex Vanous then all but iced the game with a goal in the 80th minute to end SBCC’s season at 13-7-4.
