
Passed peacefully on December 26 after a courageous battle with metastatic lung cancer. She is survived by her husband Stephen Stanley and sons Scott and Rory Stanley. Margaret was born on October 8, 1952 at Chanute Air Force Base in Illinois, but grew up in Santa Barbara where she attended local schools and UC Santa Barbara where she attained a degree in Geography. Upon graduating she was hired by the California Coastal Commission where she worked as a resource analyst for 8 years and then subsequently at Gaviota State Parks. In 1993 she moved to the Puget Sound area where she worked for 20 years with the City of Issaquah as a park planner. During her time with the City Margaret was instrumental in securing a series of grants that successfully set aside 100’s of acres along Issaquah Creek and adjoining upland areas on Squak and Tiger Mountain for protection and restoration. Margaret also worked tirelessly with the Mountain to Sound Greenway, Department of Natural Resources and Forest Service to set aside lands for the green way trail along I90 in the Seattle/King County area.Margaret brought clarity, coordination and cooperation to the protection of natural lands in King County and helped inspire, lead and guide many other individuals in their efforts to protect and preserve natural lands for public use and enjoyment over the long term. Margaret is widely recognized for having left a legacy of preserved public open spaces that will endure forever to the benefit of wildlife, the environment, and future generations.She will be missed and remembered for her laughter, graciousness,compassion, dancing at parties, magnificent dinners and deserts,enthusiasm for outdoor sports especially swimming, running, hiking and kayaking and most importantly love of her family and friends and the natural world.
