Rudy was born in Ventura, CA to Carlos and Felicitas Marquez on May 3, 1933. Rudy grew up in Ventura, where he attended local schools and community college. Rudy proudly enlisted in the United States Army in 1951, and was stationed in Germany during the Korean War. In 1965, Rudy moved to Santa Barbara, CA, where he married the love of his life, Hortencia “Ordy” Ramirez.
Known to be talented in construction, painting, and auto mechanics, he was passionate about working on cars, and could repair just about anything through his determination. Many locals knew Rudy from his quick wit and sense of humor. He carried a jovial disposition, and could always find conversation with anyone he met. He enjoyed music, dancing, playing pool, and especially weekend trips to Las Vegas, NV. Rudy was an active parishioner at Holy Cross Church.
Rudy passed away peacefully with Ordy and family by his side on January 30, 2019. He is preceded in death by his infant daughter Erin, sons John and Patrick Marquez; sisters Vera, Hope, Esther, Elsie, Emma and Aurora “Jr.”.
Rudy is survived by his wife of 53 years, Hortencia “Ordy” Ramirez Marquez, daughter Phyllis Thomas, son Chuck Marquez, sisters Julia Ramirez, Emily Beavers, brothers Bill, Richard and Charlie Marquez. He is also survived by four grandchildren Veronica, Ashley, Paul and John, six great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
A Viewing will be on Monday, February 11, 2-5 p.m. at Welch-Ryce-Haider Funeral Chapel, 15 East Sola St. A Mass of Christian burial will be at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, 21 East Sola St., Tuesday, February 12, at 10:00 a.m. with a graveside service immediately following at Calvary Cemetery.
