83, of Santa Barbara California, passed away on May 6, 2013 peacefully in her home surrounded by her family and loved ones. A private memorial was held in her honor.
Doris was born February 1, 1930 in Geneva, NY, to Donald and Florence Harrington. She was raised by her mother and her doting stepfather, Howard Soper in Elmira New York where she enjoyed an idealistic childhood. Doris attended Elmira High School and went on to work at the United States Pentagon, in the Department of the Army in the early 50s. She was awarded a letter of commenda-tion for her outstanding service at the Pentagon.
In 1951 at Colonial Beach, VA, Doris met the love of her life, Robert (Bob) Moore who was stationed at Dahlgren Naval Base. They were married on November 25, 1953 and enjoyed 59 years together.
The pride of Doris’s life was her family. She will be remembered for her fierce love and loyalty to her immediate family as well as extended family. Her home was always open to everyone including a n imals . Sh e en joye d a lif etime f illed with Shetland ponies, wild birds, cats, and any other critters in need of a home. Doris also raised award winning Siamese cats in the 70s and 80s and was instrumental in starting the chapter of Cat Fanciers’ Association of Santa Barbara.
Doris and Bob moved from Montecito, CA. to the Mojave Desert in1990 where they began a new chapter in their lives as owners of the Barstow Calico KOA Campground. Doris was ‘The Boss’ for 16 years and the campground earned many prestigious KOA awards under their ownership. She also enjoyed new found friendships with travelers from all over the world and locals alike. Doris was very fond of the desert climate and wildlife.
Doris spent her retirement years in Bullhead City, AZ. where she loved spending time by the river, feeding the roadrunners, and having deck parties with her friends and family. She was also a loyal patron and friend at Lazy Harry’s where her close friends held a memorial in her honor. Doris was cherished by many friends, old and new alike.
In recent years, Doris moved to Goleta, CA. to be closer to her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed family BBQ’s, visiting with ‘the kids’ and going to the beach to feed the birds. Doris was also a loyal patron and friend at Rudy’s, where she will be sorely missed.
Doris will always be remembered for her love and loyalty to her family and friends, her quick wit, strength of character, and her gift of gentleness with animals. Doris is survived by her soul mate and husband Robert Moore, her children: Steven, Sherry, Kenny and Eric, along with their spouses and 11 grandchildren. She will never be forgotten and she will forever be loved and missed.
