SANTA BARBARA COUNTY Santa Barbara County Assistant County Executive Officer Matt Pontes has been named the County Executive Officer of Shasta County.
The Shasta County Board of Supervised announced the appointment of Mr. Pontes effective Jan. 27. While working for Santa Barbara County, Mr. Pontes oversaw the county’s community services, which included the general services department, community services department, public works, planning and development, agriculture department and the office of emergency management. He led the efforts from conceptual design to the construction of the county’s largest capital project, the $120 million new North County jail facility, according to a news release.
Mr. Pontes formerly was the director of the county’s general services department. He also served as the director of recovery in the wake of the Thomas Fire and 1/9 debris flow, during which time he led a team of recovery managers, communications professionals, consultants, others who focus on recovery and resiliency efforts.
Mr. Pontes attended Allan Hancock Community College and Cal Poly, where he earned a degree in forestry and natural resource management with a concentration in wildland fire and hydrology. He also has a degree from the Municipal Forest Institute. In addition, Mr. Pontes worked for the U.S. Forest Service and the Sequoia National Forest.
