Cavin Ross threw for 211 yards, Ryan Morgan was on the receiving end of 122 yards worth of Ross’ throws and Sheldon Canley rushed for 114 yards to lead Lompoc to a resounding 45-7 win over Santa Ynez in the Channel League opener for both teams.
Ross finished 15-for-26 with a touchdown pass. That TD strike went to Morgan — a tight end who has committed to the University of Wyoming — for 75 yards. Canly scored two touchdowns on runs of 70 and 40 yards.
Lompoc’s ground attack wasn’t limited to Canley. Senior running back Oscar Tenorio ran for 76 yards and two touchdowns, while Leondre Coleman rushed for 55 yards, which included a 12-yard touchdown run.
Ross also found Cailin Daniels for 76 yards through the air.
“I just thought we were a little sloppy early, but I think we regrouped and overall I think we played well,” Braves coach Andrew Jones said after his team improved to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the Channel League. “We’re about two or three plays away from being 6-0 this year. We’re just trying to clean some things up.”
Lompoc host Dos Pueblos next Friday in another Channel League game.
GRACE BRETHREN 42, BISHOP DIEGO 13
Undefeated Grace Brethren scooped up a Bishop Diego fumble in the opening minutes, ran in for a touchdown and never looked back while opening Camino League play with a 42-13 victory at Moorpark College Friday night.
Grace (6-0) outgained the Cardinals 356-123 in total yardage.
Isaac Garcia’s defensive play to start the game, covering 34 yards, set the tone against Bishop (3-3).
The Lancers made big plays all night, with Mikey Ziele completing touchdown passes of 71 and 21 yards to Nate Bennett, and 93 yards to Julien Stokes.
Stokes also scored on a 50-yard run while Elijah Jones added a 63-yard TD run.
The injury-wracked Cardinals finally scored in the fourth quarter — ironically, on two fumble recoveries. The first came when the ball popped loose as Adrian Soracco tried to score on a run. Hunter Boeddeker picked it up and ran it in from the two-yard line.
Soracco led Bishop with 75 yards rushing on 19 carries.
Matthew Briebesca scored the Cardinals’ final TD when he scooped up a Grace fumble and ran nine yards into the end zone.
The Cardinals return to action next Saturday at SBCC’s La Playa Stadium to play Camarillo, another state powerhouse.

The Rams scored 27 unanswered points in the first half, helping Cate win its first-ever matchup against the Sharks.

Deardorf scored to open the second half before backup QB Matt Homles drove the team down before Jack Ludviksen scored on a one-yard touchdown.
Cate improved to 3-2 on the season. The Rams will have a bye next week before opening up Mt. Pinos League play Oct. 19.
