Norman Salzman, a long time resident of Santa Barbara, passed away July, 11, 2013, shortly before his 100th birthday. Norman was born in New York City on October 30, 1913 to Max and Rose Klein Salzman, and was the youngest of 5 brothers. Norman received an Associate of Arts Degree from City College of New York. He served in the U.S. Army specializing in communication equipment. After his discharge from the military, he married Esther Finger, and in 1946, they moved to Santa Barbara where he owned and operated Business Equipment Center on Haley Street.
Norman was one of the founding members of B’nai B’rith Congregation. He was active in the Amateur Radio Club and Emergency Communications. He was an avid yachtsman and ran a Coast Guard radio station out of his home coordinating Search and Rescue Operations. He was a Commander in the Coast Guard Auxiliary as well as an instructor of Small-boat Piloting and Navigation. Further, he conducted safe boat inspections and other services for the Auxiliary.
Norman was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 40 years, Esther Salzman and his son, Mitchel Salzman. He is survived by his son, Sam and his wife, Toni of Goleta, his grandson, Justin Salzman and wife Bridget of San Diego, and his granddaughter, Elise and husband Patrick Kelly of Littleton, Colorado.
Other survivors include his nephews, Melvin and Marc Salzman, Irwin and Maurice Kurland, and nieces, Ina, Beth, Debra and Shayna Kurland, Nadine Salzman, and cousins Anna and Pamela Joy Wallace.
Graveside services will be Monday, July 15th at 11:00 a.m. at Santa Barbara Cemetary. Arrangements by Welch-Ryce-Haider Funeral Chapels.
