The San Marcos High girls water polo team saw its season come to an end Friday night, as the Royals lost in overtime, 12-8, in the first round of the CIF Regionals against Bishop’s High.
“I was extremely proud of how we played and our team gained a tremendous amount of confidence,” San Marcos coach Chuckie Roth said.
“I had such a positive experience coaching this group. They are great kids in the classroom and in the pool.”
The Royals fell behind early against the Knights but managed to tie up the score by halftime at 4-all.
With San Marcos trailing by two in the final quarter, the Royals ran “a special play” according to Roth to bring the score within one. On the ensuing possession, San Marcos brought out its goalkeeper and scored off the counter to tie the game forcing overtime, where the Royals eventually fell behind and could not recover.
Caroline Cortouis led San Marcos with three goals. Goalkeeper Zosia Amberger had nine saves including a five-meter in the Royals final game of the year.
