SANTA BARBARA The California Highway Patrol will conduct a school bus pedestrian safety enforcement operation Thursday throughout Santa Barbara County focusing on motorists who fail to stop for a school bus with flashing red lights activated and stop arm extended.
CHP officers will ride as passengers on school buses and watch for violations, the CHP anounced Tuesday. Drivers who are observed illegally passing a school bus will be stopped by an officer and issued a warning or traffic citation.
When a school bus flashes red lights (located at the top front and back of the bus), drivers in either direction must stop until the children are safely across the street and the lights stop flashing. Failure to stop could result in fines of $1,000 and license suspension.
