SANTA BARBARA Those looking to learn more about the local marine environment can now join the Sea Center team as a volunteer.
The center on Stearns Wharf is recruiting exhibit interpreter volunteers who will help inform aquarium visitors. The Sea Center will offer training to volunteers.
The exhibit interpreter volunteers will perform hands-on demonstrations and give live animal presentations at the Sea Center’s Shark Cove, Intertidal Wonders, and Wet Deck exhibits.
Those interested in joining the Sea Center’s volunteers must submit an online application that can be found at www.sbnature.org/volunteer/adult/sea-center-opportunities.
All applicants will be interviewed. Those 18 years or older must pass a background check, while applicants under the age of 14 must volunteer with a parent or guardian.
Once selected, individuals must attend the Sea Crew Orientation and pay $25 for the volunteer uniform.
Applicants must commit to a three-hour shift per week for at least four months.
After completing 48 hours as an entry-level exhibit interpreter, volunteers can apply for advanced volunteer opportunities that include more specialized activities, such as sea diving and plankton monitoring.
