Two students from Santa Barbara High School suffered serious injuries during an off-campus fight Monday afternoon, authorities said.
Police and paramedics responded to Ortega Park at around 3:45 p.m. on reports of a fight between several local juveniles with multiple injuries.
Sgt. Chris Payne of the Santa Barbara Police Department said at the scene that the injuries included a stabbing.
Frann Wageneck, assistant superintendent of student services at Santa Barbara Unified School District, issued a statement about the incident.
“We wanted to inform our families and staff that Santa Barbara police are investigating an altercation that took place at about 3:45 p.m. today between several local youth. Two of the students, both from Santa Barbara High, suffered serious injuries during the incident, which took place at Ortega Park, adjacent to Santa Barbara Junior High.
“Student safety is very important to all staff members. We are working with local law enforcement as they continue to investigate this matter.”
More information about the injuries and their severity was unavailable Monday.
“I can’t speak to their status right now,” said police spokesman Anthony Wagner.
As of Monday evening, no arrests have been made and the investigation was continuing.
