SANTA BARBARA Two people were arrested Wednesday in connection with an assault that occurred in the 700 block of State Street, police said.
Around 3:30 p.m., a 13-year-old boy was downtown with his grandparents eating ice cream. When the boy went to throw his trash away he came across a man collecting cans from the trash. The boy’s grandfather got into a verbal altercation with the man before an uninvolved woman got involved and assaulted the grandfather, said Anthony Wagner, spokesman for the Santa Barbara Police Department.
The boy’s grandmother intervened and was then assaulted by the woman, later identified as 23-year-old Caitlin Rose Crenshaw. Bystanders broke up the fight before Ms. Crenshaw and 23-year-old Cody Huynh fled the scene on foot.
Police located Ms. Crenshaw and Mr. Huynh near the intersection of State and De La Guerra streets. They were arrested on suspicion of assault, battery and elder abuse, Mr. Wagner said.
The boy was uninjured, while the grandparents, who were in their 70s, were treated for minor injuries.
Evidence indicated Ms. Crenshaw and Mr. Huynh had arrived in Santa Barbara two days prior to the incident. They were booked into jail Wednesday night and released Thursday morning, Mr. Wagner said.
