ORCUTT Two people died and several others were injured in a multi-vehicle collision involving a semi-truck Thursday morning at the intersection of State Route 135 and Union Valley Parkway in Orcutt, authorities said.
The crash was reported at 6:29 a.m. A semi was traveling south on the 135 when it struck the rear of a Nissan. Four additional vehicles were struck in the collision, according to the California Highway Patrol. Both occupants of the Nissan, identified as 60-year-old Rickie Motley, of Orcutt, and Jesse Donald Gluyas, 24, of Solvang, were pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.
The driver of the semi, Gilbert Pena, 56, of Santa Maria, suffered moderate to major injuries and was transported by ground ambulance to Marian Regional Medical Center. Eight others suffered minor injuries but none required further medical attention, said Capt. Dave Zaniboni, spokesman for the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.
Portions of the highway were shut down for a time Thursday morning.
Alcohol or drugs are suspected to have been a contributing factor in the collision, the CHP said.
An investigation is ongoing.
