The UCSB baseball team, which is off to a 3-1 start, opens a three-game weekend series tonight against Abilene Christian at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium at 5:30 p.m.
Sophomore left-hander Rodney Boone will go in search of his first win of the season for the Gauchos. Boone finished a fantastic freshman season with an 8-0 record last year, but got roughed up in last Friday’s season opener at Sacramento State.
Boone was charged with four runs on three hits in three innings of work and suffered the loss after the Gauchos fell, 6-1. UCSB won the final two games of that three-game set, 1-0 in 11 innings and 4-2.
UCSB followed that with a 17-7 dismantling of Pac-12 opponent Cal in the team’s home opener on Monday night. The Gauchos banged out 15 hits and received an outstanding relief appearance by James Callahan, who got the win. Junior left-hander Zach Torra (0-0) is scheduled to start Saturday’s game (4 p.m.) for UCSB, and sophomore righty Michael McGreevy (1-0) is slated to throw Sunday’s series finale (noon) against Abilene Christian.
McGreevy earned his first win as a starter last Sunday, when he limited Sac State to one run in 6.2 innings. McGreevy was the Gauchos top reliever last season with a 1.94 earned run average in 60.1 innings of work.
