Behind nine kills from Tallulah Froley and eight and seven from Gigi Ruddins and Lindsey Ruddins, respectively, the UCSB women’s volleyball team marched to its 12th straight win on Friday night at the Thunderdome.
The Gauchos took out UC Davis in straight sets, 25-9, 25-15, 25-17 to improve to 14-1 overall and 4-0 in the Big West Conference. Zoe Fleck led UCSB with 15 digs, while Olivia Lovenberg had 19 assists and Romoni Vivao finished with 12.
The Gauchos host UC Riverside at the Thunderdome today at 5 p.m.
WESTMONT 3, MENLO 2
Cassidy Rea had a match-high 16 kills to go along with 10 digs to lead the Warriors to a 25-20, 25-17, 21-25, 22-25, 15-11 victory at Murchison Gym.
Hali Galloway also contributed 11 kills and 13 digs for Westmont, which improved to 16-3 overall and 7-1 in the Golden State Athletic Conference.
VENTURA 3, SBCC 1
The Vaqueros won their only set in record fashion.
After dropping the opening set, 25-20, SBCC beat Ventura 45-43 in the second set. It was a set that lasted nearly an hour, and was the highest-scoring set in CCCAA women’s history since rally scoring began in 2002.
The Pirates secured the win by taking the third and fourth sets, 25-13, 25-19, respectively. Madi Mullins lead the Vaqueros with 14 kills, Gabi Brewer added 13 and setter Maranda Newson had six kills to go along with a season-high 40 assists for SBCC (5-9, 1-1 Western State Conference North).
WOMEN’S WATER POLO
Taylor Brooks combined to score 10 goals to lead the Vaqueros to a pair of wins in the 21st MidState Invitational tournament in San Luis Obispo.
Brooks had three goals and four steals in SBCC’s 9-2 win over host Cuesta, then poured in seven goals to lead the Vaqueros in a rout of the Philippines National Team, 18-5.
Brooks seven goals in the Philippines game was one shy of the school record for single-game goal scoring.
SBCC continues tournament play today against the state’s top two teams, No. 1 Riverside and No. 2 Fullerton.
