Head: Seaside splendor
A dark corner, mood music and candlelight (even if it’s a faux flicker) make for a special time.
But with the sunshine back, temps up and stormy days behind us, it’s time to take in the breezes and sights that only a table overlooking the ocean can offer.
That and a delicious meal is exactly what you’ll get at Longboard’s Grill, above the Harbor Restaurant, on Stearns Wharf.
Start your meal with a mug of New England Clam Chowder. It’s authentically creamy, with plenty of the chunky, succulent mollusk.
A mug (the appetizer size) costs $6.99, a bowl (plenty for a meal) $9.95 and the Sourdough Loaf (meal and then some) $13.95.
The Santa Barbara Burger has everything you want in a hamburger, only this patty is made from ground turkey. It’s as moist and tender as a beef burger, and the seasoning will have you wondering whether this is in fact turkey.
This substantial burger comes with secret sauce, avocado, Swiss cheese, dill pickle, lettuce, tomato and red onion. It takes an equally substantial bun to hold it all, and the wheat one used here does not disappoint.
The Santa Barbara Burger feels like two burgers, really. So cut it in half, and eat one side as an appetizer, the other as a main course.
Or, if you’ve got the chops, down it all just as it comes.
Like all the sandwiches, burgers and dips on the menu, this $16.95 entree is served with fries.
Fish ’n’ chips seems to be a natural choice at a place like this, and if that’s what you’re craving, Longboard’s beer battered version with coleslaw is just $18.95.
But there’s another way to get the same fish for $2 less: Baja Fish Tacos. This dish features two soft flour tortillas each with a large piece of fish, topped with lettuce and a spicy sauce, and chunk tomato.
Spanish rice and black beans are on the side, and there’s also guacamole, salsa and tortilla chips.
The fish is freshly fried and tastes so.
Grilled chicken tacos are $15.95, Sautéed Shrimp $19.95.
Choose the deck for the ocean breeze and warm sun, or the indoor bar, where “chill” describes the vibe and the beer. Either way, Longboard’s Grill will make you remember how good it feels to get outside.
High Points: Unsurpassed views of Santa Barbara Harbor, the hills and the ocean. Quick service.
Low Points: Beware dive-bombing seagulls and pigeons.
