Passed away in March 2013 surrounded by the love of his life, Margarita Gaona and family. A 9th generation descendant of the Cota family, he was the son of Marine Cpl. Robert Viles and Ramona Cota Viles, both deceased. Rick, a passionate Roman Catholic and Third Order Franciscan, believed that his survival depended on discipline, courage and faith that only God could provide.
His life accomplishments were a true inspiration to all who knew this gentle soul. He attended local schools and was a graduate of UCSB. His writing and poetry spoke to his insights of lifetime experiences, moving the emotions of all who shared in it.
He is survived by his love, Margarita, his sister, Judy Mills (Michael) and many relatives. He will be greatly missed by these loved ones, including the Gaona family, friends, as well as, Liberty, his service dog, and Major, his German shepherd. Many thanks for the care given by Dr. Bordofsky, Dr. Greenwald, Dr. Wright, the Cancer Center and the MICU at Cottage Hospital. Services will be held April 12th 10:00am at Our Lady of Sorrows. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Cancer of Santa Barbara.
