Passed away at Cottage Hospital, Santa Barbara, CA on February 13, 2013 at the age of 92. She is survived by her loving husband, Steve, of 70 years. They were married in Beaver, OK on August 30, 1942. Living in California since 1946, they moved to Santa Barbara in 1992.
Freda is predeceased by her children, David (1988) and Lynn (2005), and lovingly remembered by her children Peggy (Jim, Santa Barbara) and John (Dorothy, Argenta, IL); grandchildren Amy, David, Paul, Elise, Diana, Jessamyn, and Sam; 11 beautiful great-grandchildren; and many beloved nephews and nieces.
Freda was born in Beaver, OK on February 16, 1920 to Herbert and Dora Bridgewater, the youngest sibling to Guilford and Iris. She graduated from Beaver High School in 1937 and earned a Bachelor’s degree from Southwestern College, KS in 1941. She met Steve while working her way through college as a secretary in the physics department.
She was involved in community volunteer work throughout her life and precinct work during elections.
Compassionate and full of grace, and with a kind word to everyone she encountered, she was always concerned about the happiness and well-being of others. Most important to her was her family, whom she showered with unconditional love at every opportunity. She was a loving and devoted wife to Steve and a dedicated and wonderful mother to her four children.
Her courage and positive outlook helped her to meet life’s challenges with her ever-present wit and impish sense of humor. We love and miss her deeply.
The memorial service will be held at Valle Verde, 900 Calle de los Amigos, Santa Barbara, CA on February 24 at 2:00 PM.
